The Baby Next Door

I just moved into the neighbourhood last week and so far, the neighbours and the land lord ahs been nothing but friendly to me. I never saw my next door neighbour though. I had never paid any attention to it, but every night, I was awaken by the sound of a baby crying. Everyday without fail, my next door neighbour baby will shriek all through the night. I had never compliant to the land lord as I am new here and it seems like the sound of baby crying does not faze the other neighbour at all.

After 3 years of living in the neighbourhood, I decide to bring up the subject to my land lord. I can not stand the baby crying anymore, it been years and the crying starting to get to me. Although I am used to it, I am curious what kind of people live next door to me. Why is the baby crying all night and stop just before the sun rises? Is the baby sick? What kind of mother or father let their baby cry without stopping or even try to stop it? Never once did I hear my neighbour voice.

My land lord looked at me with questioning eyes and she furrowed her slightly white coloured eye brows. “What are you talking about?” she asked with much filled curiosity coated in her voice. “The baby who lives one door down from my apartment. The baby been crying for years already” I said to her stating it as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “That apartment has been empty for years. Long before you even moved in next to it…” my land lord stated. “And there never was a baby who lives there before”

As the last word came out of her mouth I feel cold sweat breaking out and a sudden chill rolled down my spine. Then… where did the crying came from?
